This is an experimental and deeply persona project for my Typography class. The objective was to create an advocacy campaign for a relevant social cause, and the primary design element had to be the lyrics of a pre-selected song that relates to an advocacy theme. Furthermore, we had to include every single lyric of a selected song withing our design, but not all of them had to be legible.
Considering such an unique and complex prompt, I chose addressing the stigma around addiction and addiction recovery, as I was inspired by talking to many recovering substance abuse patients of a mental health clinic I attended a few years back. I made close connections with those people, and they told me many stores of the prejudice, lack of resources, and other difficulties they encountered during their recovery process. For the song, I chose was Bob Dylan's "Blowing in the Wind", a song about injustice in the world that can be interpreted in many ways.
The final solution is a series of illustrations that can function as an art booklet or individual posters, using type, forms, and layout in a way that heavily sways from my clean and organized design language. Each page features a different line from the song, transformed into an image which symbolically or directly relates to an issue associated with addiction or the recovery process, along with a statistic from national databases. The final page, with the refrain " And the answer, my fiend, is blowin' in the wind" reminds the audience that the solution to those problems can be easily achieved by supporting and accepting those who struggle with substance abuse disorder.
